Lawrence Bartley is a founding member of Voices From Within and a justice-focused journalist who spent 27 years incarcerated in New York State prisons, including Sing Sing Correctional Facility. While inside, he helped launch Voices From Within as a way for men living the reality of violence and incarceration to speak directly to young people and communities, and he began writing about the system from the inside out.

Since coming home, Lawrence has become the publisher of The Marshall Project Inside, overseeing News Inside—an award-winning print magazine for incarcerated readers—and hosting and executive producing the video series Inside Story, which delivers trustworthy reporting to people in prisons and jails across the country.

Through Voices From Within, he continues to use his story and his work in journalism to bridge the information gap, confront the realities of gun violence and incarceration, and show what becomes possible when people are given a real chance to change.
