Brief info

Michael Capra is the retired Superintendent of Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York, where from 2012 to 2023 he led one of the state’s largest maximum-security prisons and championed a shift from pure punishment toward education, accountability, and hope. A corrections professional since 1981, he rose from correction officer to superintendent, overseeing hundreds of staff and more than 1,700 incarcerated men.

Capra is best known for his belief that most people in prison will one day return home—and that corrections has a responsibility to help them return as healthier, more responsible members of their families and communities. At Sing Sing he supported programs that treat people not as “broken” but as capable of growth, including the creation of Voices From Within, which elevates the lived experience of incarcerated men to prevent violence and prepare people for life after prison.
